Many trivets we see in stores are made of cork. Some of them are made solely of cork, while some of them incorporate other materials as well. Why is cork the standard material for these hot plates?
Trivets are often made out of cork because cork is an excellent insulator, which helps protect surfaces from heat damage. It can withstand high temperatures, so it’s safe to place hot pots and pans on it. This is due to the molecular structure of the cork cells. Each cell is filled with 90% air, enabling it to insulate so effectively. This structure enables not only thermal insulation, but acoustic insulation as well.
Additionally, cork is lightweight, durable, and has a natural resistance to moisture, making it easy to clean and maintain. Its aesthetic appeal and ability to absorb sound also add to its popularity in kitchen and dining settings.
While cork trivets used to use only the classic cork, often either square or round, today we can find many different shapes and colors, while still being made of 100% cork. Your trivets are just as much part of the tableware as your other dishes. Dress up your table with more unique trivets, and let them be a statement piece for your next meal!
